The year was 2013. An unknown Sydney producer named Thomas Purcell uploads his new two track EP to triple j Unearthed. Pushing a new unique brand of ‘Australian Sound’ future trap, Wave Racer goes on to sign with Future Classic and spread his bubblegum bass globally.
Fast forward to now; Auswave is as popular as ever and a new generation of producers are coming into the fray. One such producer is fellow Sydneysider Oh Boy, sonically comparable to icons such as SOPHIE, Porter Robinson and Lido.
He’s just dropped a new tune called “Bunny Island” on Diplo’s sublabel ‘Good Enuff‘ and features his very talented pals Donatachi and self confessed “Hannah Montana of the rap game” Mallrat. It’s euphoric sugarcoated electro pop at its finest. Glistening arpeggios, kuwaii catchy chorus and vibrating tonal bass. This track has it all.
Putting aside the obvious brilliance in the production, can we also appreciate how spot on Oh Boy’s aesthetic is? I don’t think I’ve seen more baby pink in one spot before. Glorious.
We’re gonna be keeping an eye on Oh Boy for sure, and if you’re keen to check him out live, well, too bad. He’s playing a couple shows with Running Touch this week but they’re already sold out. Soz not soz.
