Turn back the clock about three years and you may remember hearing the robust bass of Perth producer ShockOne, real name Karl Thomas, slathered across the triple j airwaves with his defining debut album ‘Universus’ featured on the station. Shooting straight to the top of the ARIA charts, the drum & bass artist graced us with crossover gems including “Lazerbeam” with Metrik & Kyza, “Home” featuring the vocals of his sibling Reija Lee and the iconic “Chaos Theory“.
Since ‘Universus’ dropped, the air of anticipation hasn’t faded whilst fans patiently waiting for the follow up release. Well wait no longer, as the ‘In This Light EP’ is now available for purchase ‘here‘ (or stream it below ya cheap dog).
Immediately reaching #1 on the iTunes Electronic Charts, the “In This Light EP” features a wide range of feature talent, including London rappers Ragga Twins and Brisbane vocalist Savoi, who some may recognise from LDRU’s latest single. Oh, and what sort of ShockOne release would it be without a collaboration between ShockOne and Phetsta?
The four-track EP toes the line between widespread radio appeal and genuine reprisals into the dubstep and drum & bass niches that launched ShockOne’s career. Whilst listening to each of the tracks it is hard to escape the feeling that this record was tirelessly laboured over. Every moment, every element to all four tracks feels as though it has been painstakingly placed and there is an undeniable accent of perfectionism on each song – somewhat of a trademark for the ‘quality over quantity’ producer.
Hopefully it doesn’t take another 3 years to hear the next ShockOne record, but even if it did, it’d be worth the wait.
