Valentin Brunn, more commonly known under his moniker Virtual Riot, would have to be one of Germany’s most talented exports when it comes to production, and he would almost certainly be one of the youngest. Signing to Disciple Records just over a year ago the producer already has Skrillex and Excision onboard as fans. He’s just this week dropped a new EP titled “Chemistry” and in support of the release will be touring the country in June.

“Borg” featuing FuntCase is the first cab off the ranks, an easing into the EP with a comparatively mellow track (the term mellow is used contextually when talking about a dubstep release lol). It is short lived though, with alarm samples and a drum build up before the one minute mark. The drop is a veritable whirlwind of eclectic bass samples and a wall of sound dubstep synths.

The second tune, “Showdown” featuring ShockOne, is true to its name with a vocal sample that appears to be the announcer from a boxing match. It’s a club-centric power play with scarcely a moment of downtime. There’s also a particular synth in this tune that reminds me for Need For Speed on PlayStation 1 – not sure if that’s relevant info though… ShockOne is also releasing his own EP this Friday which you can preorder here.

Virtual Riot backs it up with “Juices”, a collab with Dubloadz. It’s got a bit more of a trap/twerk vibe to parts of the tune before launching into the more familiar territory of a drumstep drop and later a straight up filthy dubstep drop. If you’re amused by children swearing then this track is for you.

Closing out the EP is “Leave It Behind” with 12th Planet and Ash Riser. It’s starts out as country-swing tinged tune, but before you freak out that he’s pulled an Avicii, the whole vibe turns dark in a split second. The breakdown is a meaty and metallic wall-of-sound, but seems to lack a definitive direction. It feels like there are a few too many elements going on in this track, an unfortunate way to round out an otherwise solid release.

Virtual Riot will be in the country from the 10th to the 18th June hitting up Perth, a huge Biscuit Factory show with 12th Planet, Pogman and Noy, Newcastle, Sydney and Sunshine Coast. Check out the deets below!
